"I can’t just sit and do nothing!" Jessie said.
"Well try! You’re annoying me!" Kevin retorted just as frustrated as she was.
"Kevin i’m sorry but I do this when I’m nervous and I AM nervous so bear with me!" Jessie said.
A doctor walked into the room and they ceased their argument.
"Are you the ones waiting on Miss Matthews." He asked them.
"Yeah. That would be us." Kevin replied standing up as they faced the doctor waiting on what he had to say.
The doctor sighed.
"I’m sorry but Erica lost the baby."
Kevin fell back in his chair shocked.
"Is Erica okay?" Jessie asked him.
"Yes she’s fine. She injured her back a little but it should heal soon so don’t worry." The doctor said, "She asked to see you Jessie."
Jessie left then and went to see her friend.
Erica was in her room lying on the bed. Jessie could see that she’d been crying.
"Hi. How do you feel?" she asked her walking up to the bed.
"Okay I guess. But I feel sorta empty inside." Erica said sadly.
"I’m so sorry for bringing you into this mess!" Jessie exclaimed holding her friend’s hand.
"Jessie don’t. I don’t blame you for what happened so don’t blame yourself." Erica told her as she watched the tears trickle down Jessie’s cheeks.
"But it IS my fault!" Jessie wailed.
Erica shook her head.
"Maybe it all happened for the best." She said," I didn’t really want this baby and now it’s gone."
"How can you say that?" Jessie asked.
"But it’s true. Now I can continue my life without having to worry about a baby." Erica replied.
"I guess." Jessie said.
"And you promised me that you wouldn’t tell Brian about this right?"
"Why don’t you want him to know?" Jessie wanted to know.
"Because when I needed him the most, he left me. He didn’t wait for an explanation, he just left and because of that, I don’t think he deserves to know." Erica said a little harshly.
"Okay then. But I hope you don’t mind but I brought someone to see you." Jessie said then walked out and a few minutes later, Kevin walked in.
Erica was a little surprised to see him but her face remained passive.
"Hi, Jessie filled me in on what happened." He said standing near her.
"You blame her for what happened, don’t you?" Erica asked him.
"Well don’t you?" he countered.
"No! I was the one who attacked Josh."
"But you did it for her so technically it’s her fault!" Kevin said, "It’s her ex-boyfriend! She knew what he was capable of and she shouldn’t have gotten you involved in it!"
"I’m her best friend! I had to get involved!" Erica said. She hadn’t realized that she was shouting until now. “Why are we even arguing about this? Weren’t you the one saying that I should get an abortion?"
"Well yes but.."
"If I remember correctly, you asked me what I wanted to do with the baby since it was mine. You never wanted this baby Kevin. You made it clear to me that day I told you that, so why are you blaming Jessie for something that you wanted to happen in the first place!"
"Erica, it’s not like that!" Kevin insisted.
"You shouldn’t have come here Kevin. I don’t know why you did, but I want you to leave."
"But Erica-"
"Please?"
"Fine. If that’s what you want." He said then turned and left the room.
Erica started to cry. She didn’t want this baby so why was she so upset that it was finally taken from her?
CHAPTER 33
The next day, Erica was home resting since the doctor had ordered her to. She was told that her parents and her sister were away so they weren’t going to be home with her for a while. But they did call to find out how she was..ONCE! she felt really alone and she needed someone. But Brian was still upset with her, she had driven Kevin away and well, Jessie was at school. The only people in the house with her were her maids.
The phone rang suddenly and Erica jumped at the sound. She picked up the receiver.
"Hello?"
No answer.
"Hello?" she asked again irritated.
The phone clicked as she heard the other person hang up.
"That’s strange." She muttered with a shrug of her shoulders.
About two minutes later, the phone rang again and Erica let it ring knowing that one of her maids would answer it. She started to flip through a magazine.
The ringing stopped as she heard one of the maids pick up. She heard a knock on her bedroom door then.
"Yes?" Erica asked as Claire, their maid, entered her room.
"There’s a call for you, miss." Claire said.
"Okay thanks Claire." Erica said then picked up the phone as Claire left the room.
"Hello?"
She could hear someone breathing deeply on the other end of the phone but the person didn’t reply.
"Damnit! Who the hell is this?" Erica shouted into the receiver. She was beginning to get really frustrated now.
The phone clicked then and Erica slammed down the receiver annoyed. She went downstairs in search of Claire.
"Claire, who called for me?" she asked trying to keep her voice calm.
"I don’t know Miss." Claire said looking at her angry face, "He didn’t give a name. He just asked to speak to you and I went to call you."
It’s a guy? Who would be calling for her? She doubted that it was Brian. If he wanted to speak to her, he would have done it. It couldn’t be Kevin since she asked him for space and she knew for a fact that he’d leave her alone. So who else could it be?
"Thanks Claire." Erica said and walked back up to her room, her face a frown as she thought about her mysterious caller.
Jessie was walking down the hallway to get to her class when she saw Nick walking up the hallway, his head buried in a book as if studying something. He was totally unaware that he was approaching her. When they were only a few feet away, as if sensing her looking at him, he looked up and saw her. Their eyes met and he looked surprised to see her. He looked away and continued walking. When they were about to pass each other, Jessie grabbed his arm stopping him.
"Nick?"
Nick looked at her and shook his head before shrugging her off and walking off. Jessie could feel the tears that threatened to spill over her cheeks. Why did he have to be so cold to her? Why wouldn’t he listen to what she had to say? Britney, she thought. This was all her fault. She wanted Nick for herself and that is why she did what she did. Talk about obsession! She though.
Jessie shivered a little and went to class.
Josh was sitting in a car parked on campus opposite the Phi Alpha Beta house. He was waiting on Jessie obviously. He had to get even with that bitch! He shifted in his seat and winced a little at the pain that movement caused. His wound still hurt and he shouldn’t even be here.
When Jessie had stabbed him and left him for dead, he managed to call an ambulance and got to the hospital. He had lied and told the doctor that he had an accident and he leaned over the counter, unaware that a knife was there and accidentally stabbed himself. Josh laughed a little as he remembered that. He couldn’t believe that they actually fell for that but it was the only thing he could think of at the time.
His eye suddenly fell on someone walking up the pathway to the Phi Alpha Beta house. Josh couldn’t see her face clearly but by the colour of her hair and the way she walked, Josh assumed that it was Jessie. He quietly slipped out the car and put on a pair of shades and started to follow her.
Britney shifted her books from her right hand to her left and continued walking to the Phi Alpha Beta house. She ran a hand through her brown hair then.
Suddenly, she felt a hand clasp over her mouth preventing her from screaming and a black piece of cloth or bag or something of the sort was thrown over her face so she couldn’t see
her assailant. She felt herself being lifted and thrown over a shoulder and dumped into what felt like the back seat of a car. Her mouth was gagged and her hands were then tied. She heard the car door slam and felt the car move as it drove off. She started shaking.
CHAPTER 34
Josh drove to the cabin where he had carried them before and deposited ‘Jessie’ on the bed.
"I’m going to untie you now but if you put up a fight, I swear I’ll kill you." he said warningly.
He heard her whimper as he untied her arms. He pulled off the mask covering his face and his body froze.
"You’re not Jessie?!" He cried annoyed that he kidnapped the wrong person.
No duh! She would have screamed if her mouth was free and she wasn’t afraid of him. But the truth was, she was afraid, very afraid. And she had every right to be. Jessie? He wanted Jessie? Why?
He pulled the gag out her mouth roughly.
"Who the hell are you?" he demanded.
"B-B-Britney." She stammered.
"Britney? I thought you were Jessie!" Josh said passing a hand over his hair.
"Jessie! How the hell could you mistake me for Jessie?!" Britney asked, no shouted at him, her anger suddenly rising, "Are you blind or just plain stupid?!"
She realized that it was the wrong thing to say as soon as the words were out her mouth. But answering people like that was like a habit to her.
Josh, however, wouldn’t take that. His face turned red and he slapped her hard across her cheek with the back of his hand. Britney gasped loudly and put a hand to her burning face as tears filled her eyes.
"You better learn to control that mouth of yours." Josh told her leaning forward, his hands on either side of her on the bed, his face just inches from hers, "It could get you in serious trouble."
Britney turned to face him then. She blinked back the tears and tried to look at him as defiantly as she could. She tried to look like she wasn’t scared of him. In fact, now she was angry more than anything. The fact that this guy had just kidnapped her for Jessie, had her mad. I mean, how could you possibly mistake her for Jessie?! Jessie’s hair was practically dark brown for God’s sake, while her hair was lighter by far! Any idiot could see that! She would have told him that but she didn’t want him to hit her again and she knew he would!
Josh looked at her closely for a couple seconds, a slow smile spreading across his evil face.
"You know," he began, taking a seat on the bed next to her, "You’re kinda pretty."
Britney gave him a disgusted look but said nothing. She knew that that was the best thing to do when it came to him.
"I really wanted Jessie but since I have you instead, well, maybe we could have a little fun. You and me."
"What are you talking about?" Britney asked softly, slowly backing away from him on the bed. If this horny bastard touched her, she would kill him! Well at least try to kill him!
Josh reached for her then and she screamed as he pinned both her hands above her head with one of his.
"You can scream as loud as you want baby. No one can hear you. We’re too far away from anyone!" Josh said. He used his free hand to undo the buttons of her baby, blue shirt. When they wouldn’t give way, he ripped it and pulled it off her, his mouth coming down roughly on hers muffling her scream. He felt a tremor go down his throat.
Lucky for him, Britney was wearing a really short skirt, which he managed to pull off easily. She was crying now. She couldn’t help it. Josh got off the bed and undressed quickly before resuming his former position on the bed. He was back before Britney was able to compose herself and notice that he had let her go. He caught her hands once again and using his knee, parted her thighs. He slipped his tongue inside her mouth just as he thrust into her and started moving.
Britney couldn’t believe what was happening to her. He was hurting her so badly.
Josh climaxed a few seconds later and she felt his body go limp on top of hers before he finally got off her.
"Who needs Jessie when I’ve got you here?" Josh said with a wink and a smile then left the room.
Britney curled herself up in a ball and started to cry again.
CHAPTER 35
"Dad! What’s taking so long?" Jessie asked her father as they both sat in their living room.
"Sweetheart we should have the restraining order by tomorrow." Mr. Andrews said trying to calm his daughter down a bit.
"I don’t want a damn restraining order!" Jessie stated. "I want this asshole behind bars where he belongs!"
Mr. Andrews raised his eyebrows at his daughter’s tone of voice and colourful vocabulary.
"I’m doing everything I can Jessie!" He told her.
"Why can’t we just carry the police and arrest him?! I know where he lives. Well, I can take you there." Jessie continued.
"Jessie, the police need proof and-"
"Erica was in the hospital because of him! How much more proof do you need?"
"I know, I know. Look, I promise you, first thing in the morning, we’ll get the police and nail his ass okay?" Mr. Andrews said to his daughter, putting his hands on her shoulders.
"Promise?"
"Promise. It’s getting late. Why don’t you get to bed? Everyone’s okay and I doubt that Josh will do anything tonight. If he does try anything, I’ll be home and well, Erica’s home is practically a prison in itself. He won’t try to get in there. Not with their security system." Mr. Andrews reassured his daughter.
"Okay." Jessie said letting out a resigning sigh and heading for the stairs. She stopped short and looked at her father. "Dad?"
"Yeah honey?"
"Thank you."
Mr. Andrews smiled at her and Jessie knew that things will eventually be okay in the end.
THAT SAME NIGHT...
Since Josh was aware of the fact that Jessie knew where he was, he decided to leave that same night and go to a house he had in town. He had no doubt in his mind that she wouldn’t tell the police about what had happened. He was going to take Britney with him since she was proving to be very useful to him, but she had passed out, so he left her there and put a message on the answering machine for when Jessie got there. And he knew she would be back there.
He got in his car and thought about moving on to plan B.
CHAPTER 36
THE NEXT DAY
"Are you feeling any better?" Jessie asked Erica on the phone. Jessie was getting ready to go with her father and the police to arrest Josh since she was the only one who knew where he lived or stayed or whatever.
"A little. But I still don’t think i’m up for school today." Erica said.
"That’s okay. You take it easy and get a lot of rest." Jessie said.
"So today is the day you’re going to arrest Josh?" Erica asked.
"Yep. I’m getting ready to go with dad now. The sooner he’s in jail, the better for everyone involved." Jessie stated.
"Yeah well be careful."
"Hey! I’m going with my dad and a bunch of police officers, I’ll be fine!" Jessie said, "It’s you i’m worried about!"
"Me? In my prison?"
Jessie laughed.
"Look I gotta go. My dad’s ready to leave."
"Okay good luck!" Erica said.
"Thanks. I hope we won’t need it." Jessie replied hanging up the phone and grabbing her jacket, joined her father down stairs.
Brian was just about to leave his house to get to class when his phone rang. He turned back around and went to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hey Bri, it’s Kevin. I need to talk to you." he heard a voice say.
"What about?" Brian asked a little harshly. He knew that he shouldn’t be mad at him but he couldn’t help it.
"Erica." Kevin said.
"Look Kev, I don’t have time right now-"
"It’s important Brian." Kevin insisted, “Why don’t you meet me at the on-campus cafe for lunch?"
"Fine. But I really gotta go."
"Okay go. I’ll see you later." Kevi
n said.
Brian hung up the phone and walked out the door, locking it behind him.
