  Josh saw Jessie reach for the gun and jumped for it ahead of her. He picked it up and grabbing Jessie around the shoulders, pointed the gun at her temple.

  “Okay, nobody move!” he shouted.

  CHAPTER 45

  Everyone in the room stood up slowly, well except for Erica who was still tied to the chair.

  "I knew I couldn’t trust you!" Josh said shaking Jessie, "You had to bring your boyfriend along didn’t you? Did you bring the police too?!" he asked her.

  "No! I never told anyone where I was. I swear!" Jessie screamed back at him.

  "She’s telling you the truth Josh!" Nick said.

  "You stay out of this!" Josh screamed pointing the gun at him, "If it wasn’t for you, I would have gotten her back!"

  Police sirens could be heard nearing the hotel.

  "Shit!" Josh cried, "Don’t you think about following me!" he told them and headed out the door still holding Jessie and the gun. He was about to go down the stairs when he heard the police cars pull up to the hotel so he headed up the roof instead.

  Nick obviously couldn’t just let him take Jessie so he tried to follow them without being noticed. He knew that Josh wouldn’t hesitate to shoot either one of them if he felt like it. He left Brian in the room to untie Erica.

  Josh reached the roof top and still holding Jessie as tight as humanly possible, walked a little closer to the edge to look down. He saw the entire hotel surrounded by police officers.

  "It’s over Josh! There’s no way you’re going to get away now." Jessie said to him.

  "Shut up okay! Just shut up!" Josh said both angry and frustrated.

  Jessie could feel the barrel of the gun pushing against her head as he said this.

  The door to the roof top opened and Nick walked out. Josh got upset on seeing him and pointed the gun at him.

  "Nick! Look out!" Jessie screamed at him.

  Nick ducked in time and the shot Josh fired missed him completely.

  "Can’t you leave us alone?!" Josh yelled at him.

  Nick shook his head at him, ‘I’m sorry. I can’t do that." He told him, "I love her too much." He looked directly at Jessie when he said this.

  “I love her too!" Josh protested.

  "You call that ‘Love’?" Nick asked him, "Holding a gun to her head and threatening to rape her, to kill her?"

  Josh paused for a second as Nick’s words sunk into his brain.

  "But I would never... I would never hurt her!" Josh said confused.

  Nick’s words were hitting too close to home.

  "You’re doing it now." Nick said walking very slowly up to them, "Can’t you see how scared she is of you?"

  Josh looked at her and saw how scared she really was of him. He softened a bit, "I never meant to hurt you Jessie." He said softly, "I’m sorry." He suddenly felt an overwhelming feeling of loss as he realized that he could never have Jessie. She wanted to be with someone else and it hurt him to even think about that.

  Jessie realized that Josh was caught up in his own world.

  "Josh?" she said quietly. He put down the gun and took her hand in his.

  "Just give yourself up Josh. There’s nowhere to go." Nick told him.

  "You’re wrong Nick." Josh said then faced Jessie, “I love you, but if I can’t have you, then no one can." He jumped off the roof then and pulled Jessie with him. Jessie screamed.

  "Jessie!" Nick screamed at the top of his lungs as he saw his girlfriend go over. He rushed up to the wall and looked over.

  Jessie felt herself go over the wall and tried to reach for something...anything! Her hand caught something hard and she managed to hang on while she got both hands up, holding on for dear life.

  She heard a thud at the bottom and didn’t have to look down to know that was Josh.

  "Jessie?!" She heard Nick call her name. She looked up and saw him leaning over the wall, his blonde hair falling over his face as his hands reached for her.

  "Nick, help me!" she cried, her fingers were hurting so much.

  "Try to pull yourself up!" Nick said, trying to reach for her, but she was still too far.

  "I can’t!" she said about to look down when Nick’s voice stopped her.

  "Don’t look down Jess! Just give me your hand!"

  ‘I can’t Nick!" she was crying again.

  "Come on Jess! You can do this!" Nick said.

  Jessie tried to reach for him with her right hand and slipped a little and screamed.

  "Damnit! Where the hell is the police when you need them!?" Nick cried out frustrated, "Jess, take your time!"

  She tried to reach for him again. Their fingers were barely touching now.

  "A little...further.." Nick said and then he was holding her hand firmly in his.

  "Come on, pull yourself up!" he said, his voice strained as he tried to pull her up. As she inched closer to him, he got a hold of her other hand and pulled her to him. Jessie collapsed on top of him as she reached the top. Nick held her tight as if he were afraid to let her go. She started crying uncontrollably and Nick let her cry on his shoulder.

  "It’s okay baby." He said soothingly, "It’s all over now.

  EPILOGUE

  "Thanks for dinner guys! It was great!" Jessie told Erica and Brian before she and Nick proceeded to the car.

  Jessie sighed as Nick drove the car. He looked at her and smiled.

  “What?" she asked him, pouting a little.

  “Nothing!" Nick said looking back out at the road, the smile still on his face.

  "No, what?" Jessie asked again. She hated when people did that.

  "Nothing!"

  "Nick!"

  "You just look so peaceful that’s all!" Nick said.

  Jessie looked at him strangely as if contemplating whether to believe him or not.

  "Do you really blame me after everything we’ve been through these past few months?" she stated.

  Nick stopped the car at the beach and they walked over to where they went on their first date. The cove. Nick laid the blanket on the sand and they lay down on it. Jessie lay her head on his chest and his arms were wrapped tightly around her.

  Josh’s suicide occurred a few days before and Nick and Jessie were so busy with the police that they didn’t get the time to talk about themselves and what happened between them. They decided that now was the best time.

  "Nick?"

  "Hmm?"

  "I’m sorry for not telling you what I had to do to get into Phi Alpha Beta at the beginning." Jessie said softly, "I didn’t mean to use you like that. It’s just that, everything was going wrong in my life. My grades were falling so bad and this was what i had to do to make it better." she tried to explain, "But when we started going out and I got to know you, I forgot all about the sorority and I fell in love with you. That’s the reason I slept with you. Nothing else. I told Erica that I wasn’t joining the sorority anymore and Britney overheard us talking , that’s how she found out. And she used it against me. And it worked. You believed her. What I don’t understand is, why would you believe her over me?"

  Nick sighed and tightened his hold on her.

  "I wanted to believe you, Jess. I really did." Nick said, "But everything she said made sense. It all fit. I mean when we first met, you didn’t want to have anything to do with me and then all of a sudden you’re asking me out."

  "Nick, the only reason I didn’t want to go out with you was because of my break up with Josh."

  "I know that now and I’m sorry for the way I acted. I should’ve listened to everything you had to say before I jumped to conclusions." Nick said brushing a stray strand away from her face.

  “Yes you should have." Jessie agreed. Then changed the topic. “I can’t believe that Josh was so psychotic!"

  "Jessie, that maniac, and I use that term loosely, tried to kill you. Believe it!" Nick said.

  "I know, I know!" Jessie said, "Anyway, it doesn’t matter. It’s over. Josh is gone. He’s in my past now and I don’t want to think about my past. Not w
hen I know I have a great future ahead of me." Jessie said. She looked up at Nick and smiled at him before he kissed her. She snuggled up closer to him and then fell asleep with a smile on her face.
